SUSTAINABLY ACCOMMODATING FORECAST GROWTH

Forecasts of passengers, aircraft movements and air freight volumes provide the fundamental basis for the future planning of airport facilities.

The forecasts in the existing approved Master Plan 03/04 for 2024 and the Preliminary Draft Master Plan for 2029 are shown in the table below. Both forecasts are compared to 2007.

Sydney Airport can accommodate the forecast growth in airline travel because:

  • airport facilities – including terminals, freight facilities, hangars, aircraft parking, airport roads and car parking – are proposed to be progressively upgraded over the next 20 years.
  • aviation technology is improving all the time: new generation aircraft are quieter, cleaner, more efficient and they consume less fuel.
  • new bus services and more frequent trains to and from the airport are planned by the NSW Government.

Governments are also considering upgrades to the M4 and M5 motorways. New infrastructure and public transport services will make it easier for people to travel to and from Sydney Airport.

Importantly, Sydney Airport's updated Master Plan is based on:

  • No changes to the curfew
  • No changes to flight paths
  • No changes to the aircraft movement cap
  • No new runways
  • No change to access arrangements for regional airlines
